The history of OCTUM GmbH began in 1996 with eight employees. The name OCTUM is derived from the Latin word “octo”, meaning “eight”, and continues to commemorate the company’s beginnings.
Originating from a group at the Steinbeis Transfer Center for Machine Vision in Heilbronn, OCTUM developed into an internationally active system integrator for industrial machine vision and automated optical inspection.
Today, OCTUM develops, integrates and supports custom machine vision and AOI systems for machine builders, equipment manufacturers and manufacturing companies. More than 6,000 installed systems, proprietary software solutions and projects across different industries represent three decades of technical development and practical experience.

The milestones show how OCTUM has developed from a small machine vision team into an internationally active provider of complete inspection systems since 1996.
Cameras, software platforms, evaluation methods and regulatory requirements have changed considerably since 1996. However, the fundamental task has remained the same: quality characteristics must be detected, evaluated and documented reliably under real production conditions.
OCTUM combines more than 30 years of machine vision experience with current technologies. These include traditional rule-based evaluation methods, 2D and 3D machine vision, proprietary software solutions and AI-based methods.
The decisive factor is not an individual technology but the coordinated complete system comprising cameras, optics, lighting, software, mechanics, interfaces and machine integration.
Some OCTUM systems remain in production for many years or even decades. Products, formats and inspection requirements change, while components age and technical platforms continue to evolve.
OCTUM therefore continues to support its systems after commissioning. Support, maintenance, repairs, training, adaptations, expansions and modernization help ensure that existing inspection solutions can remain in use over the long term.
This responsibility throughout the entire system lifecycle is not a new business area. It has been an essential part of OCTUM’s corporate history from the beginning.
From a team of eight employees, OCTUM has developed into an internationally active system integrator for industrial machine vision and AOI.
