30 Years of OCTUM – Milestones in Industrial Machine Vision

From Eight Employees to an International System Integrator

The history of OCTUM GmbH began in 1996 with eight employees. The name OCTUM is derived from the Latin word “octo,” meaning “eight,” and continues to commemorate the company’s beginnings.

Originating from a group at the Steinbeis Transfer Center for Machine Vision in Heilbronn, Germany, OCTUM developed into an internationally active system integrator for industrial machine vision and automated optical inspection.

Today, OCTUM develops, integrates and supports custom machine vision and AOI systems for OEMs, equipment manufacturers and manufacturing companies. More than 6,000 installed systems, proprietary software solutions and projects across different industries represent three decades of technical development and practical experience.

With OCTUM USA in Charlotte, North Carolina, customers across the Americas now also benefit from a local point of contact backed by OCTUM’s engineering, software, application and support expertise in Germany.

  • 2019Nearly 5,000 OCTUM machine vision systems are operating worldwide in production equipment and manufacturing lines.
  • 2015OCTUM reaches two important growth milestones: 3,000 machine vision systems have been installed worldwide, and the team has grown to 30 employees.
  • 2013The company building in Ilsfeld is expanded with additional office space for 20 more workstations.
  • 2010With CV-Inspect, OCTUM launches another proprietary software solution for industrial machine vision and inspection applications.
  • 2009OCTUM constructs and moves into its own company building in Ilsfeld, providing approximately 12,900 square feet—or 1,200 square meters—of space.
  • 2008OCTUM introduces its proprietary OCTUMISEr machine vision software, expanding the possibilities for implementing complex inspection systems.
  • 2006OCTUM implements its first proprietary inspection system using 3D machine vision, further expanding its technological capabilities.
  • 2004OCTUM is named “Cognex System Integrator of the Year for Central Europe.”
  • 2001With CV-600, OCTUM launches another proprietary software solution for industrial machine vision applications.
  • 1999OCTUM becomes a Cognex system integrator and expands its technology portfolio for industrial machine vision.
  • 1996Eight employees from a group at the Steinbeis Transfer Center for Machine Vision in Heilbronn establish OCTUM GmbH. The CV-300 software is introduced in the same year.

Experience That Shapes Today’s Inspection Systems

Technical Development Does Not End with a Milestone

Cameras, software platforms, evaluation methods and regulatory requirements have changed considerably since 1996. However, the fundamental task has remained the same: quality characteristics must be detected, evaluated and documented reliably under actual manufacturing conditions.

OCTUM combines more than 30 years of machine vision experience with current technologies. These include traditional rule-based evaluation methods, 2D and 3D machine vision, proprietary software solutions and AI-based methods.

The decisive factor is not an individual technology but the coordinated complete system comprising cameras, optics, lighting, software, mechanics, interfaces and equipment integration.

Long-Term Support as Part of Our History

Some OCTUM systems remain in production for many years or even decades. Products, formats and inspection requirements change, while components age and technical platforms continue to evolve.

OCTUM therefore continues to support its systems after commissioning. Technical support, maintenance, repairs, training, adaptations, expansions and modernization help ensure that existing inspection solutions can remain in use over the long term.

This responsibility throughout the entire system lifecycle is not a new business area. It has been an essential part of OCTUM’s corporate history from the beginning.

Customers in the United States, Central America and South America benefit from local technical coordination and support through OCTUM USA in Charlotte. The Charlotte location works closely with OCTUM’s engineering, application, software and support teams in Germany.
